A win for Sparkle at Aske Hall!
Wow … what a few weeks! Both Sparkle and Buck were competing in the Novice sections at Skipton Horse Trials. Both did nice tests but I think there’s still room for improvement – being the demanding owner! Buck jumped a fabulous double clear to finish just out of the top ten. Ben had a moment of madness with Sparkle putting a gag in for the jumping rather than his normal bit. Sparkle didn't approve of this change and had two down but despite this jumped well XC to finish 9th.
This weekend was Aske Hall - this is my local event and is always full of drama in the show jumping due to the undulating arena and old park land making the XC time hard to achieve. Buck was competing in the novice with Will and once again jumped double clear. Will and I have the same attitude with young horses - let them take their time XC and learn the job rather than run them fast for a rosette. I run all of my Pre-Novice and Novice level horses slowly with the future in mind, once they’re at Intermediate and above they know their job and then I go for the time! Sparkle was competing in his first Intermediate with Ben - the snaffle was back in! We thought we would test him here to see how he coped with the option of going back down to novice if he struggled. Sparkle was a super-star and went on to win! He made the XC look like a Pre-Novice and only got a handful of time faults because Ben could just let Sparkle keep moving on at the combinations without taking a pull. It was a pleasure to watch, however I'm not sure if I will get over the nerves of watching my horses with other people riding them but it’s great to see that the boys are getting to grips with my horses!
