The Area 13 Competition by Maddie O’Carroll

I am very excited to say that Rooney and I are off to the Dengie Winter League Dressage Championships!

Last Sunday was a busy day – the HHPC was running the Area 13 qualifier, so we were up early to help set up and open gates etc. I was riding in the afternoon, so I had plenty of time to get the horses ready. The Intermediate class was first with Sidney and he felt great in the warm-up, even with the cold weather. However, I had a slight SatNav issue (sorry Sid!). After the judge rang the bell, I knew I had gone wrong, but we finished the test to get 68% to come fourth, so I was really pleased with him.

Then it was Rooney’s turn in the Open class and, as always, he put on his dancing shoes for me to do a good, forward, balanced test to get 70% and win the class! Extra carrots for these two super horses!

We are now preparing for the finals - I am learning the championships test, riding through the movements and making sure Rooney is in top condition. We have sent off our entry and have booked a stable for Rooney for the night before. Last year, the atmosphere was great – it was so lovely to ride in a big arena with flowers everywhere and all the horses and riders looking so smart. I am really looking forward to our road trip (I think Rooney is too!) to Addington Manor on the 3rd April!
