About Dengie
From field to feed
Founded in 1968 as a farmer’s cooperative, Dengie is still run today with the same ethos of supporting the local farming community.
We grow as many of our own ingredients as possible which keeps our ‘feed miles’ low and provides the best traceability possible – every bag of our horse feed can be traced back to the field it was grown in.
Because we love horses as much as you do
At Dengie we are devoted to creating the best and healthiest horse feeds because we love your horse as much as you do. Our sales and nutritional teams are experienced and passionate horse owners and understand the many feeding challenges encountered today.
A commitment to quality
Everyone at Dengie is proud of our connection with the land and we are always mindful that we need to grow our crops as sympathetically as possible both for the benefit of our customers and to ensure the future sustainability of what we do.
Our farmers are family farmers and they want to ensure there is a viable future for generations to come. They know and understand the importance of sustainable farming – it is why many choose to grow the alfalfa itself as they recognise the benefits this incredible plant offers to the soil, wildlife and wider environment.
Our philosophy
The Dengie philosophy is to create the best feeds we can to support and promote the horse’s health and well-being.
We acknowledge that the concept of welfare is a complicated subject but we feel it’s important to recognise that good care and good welfare are different. Good care is the very least that a horse should experience, but as research helps us to understand what good welfare looks like, we want to support horse owners in achieving that. This is why we employ a team of highly qualified, practical nutritionists who are actively involved in research projects with respected institutions around the world and we invest in their training and development to ensure they can provide the very best advice and support. Our commitment to the nutritional care and well-being of horses will always be the main reason you can rely on Dengie. It’s also why we fully support and share the ethos of British Equestrian’s Charter for the Horse. As responsible members of the equestrian community, we pledge to this charter for the ethical and fair treatment of all horses and other equids under our care. Charity partners
We are proud to be working with the following charities to help conserve and protect not just the British countryside, but also the Earth’s rainforest communities. Find out more about our partners, their great work and why Dengie chooses to support them.
Essex Wildlife Trust
The county’s leading conservation charity, committed to protecting wildlife and inspiring a lifelong love of nature. With our main production site being situated in the heart of Essex and our inherent relationship with the land we understand the importance of sustainable farming.
It is why many of our farmers choose to grow the alfalfa itself as they recognise the benefits this incredible plant offers to the soil, wildlife and wider environment. By supporting Essex Wildlife Trust, we are in turn supporting many of their projects which include a Barn owl conservation project, purchasing land to provide wildlife corridors and introducing Black Honey bees and Polecats back to the area.

British Hen Welfare Trust
The British Hen Welfare Trust is an international charity working to improve the lives of commercial laying hens whilst promoting the therapeutic benefits they have on human wellbeing. We rehome thousands of birds each year, giving them a happy retirement after a life spent laying eggs for the food industry. Underpinning our work is support for responsible farming practices and high standards of welfare.
