Metabolism Matters in aid of Equine Grass Sickness Fund
One of the parts of my job that I love is getting the opportunity to travel, including visiting all corners of the UK. Last month, I enjoyed a couple of days in Scotland with our Area Sales Manager, Adam Ford.
As part of the trip, we were delighted to be asked to speak at an event hosted by Norvite Equine Nutrition. The event was called “Metabolism Matters” and focussed on the topic of weight management and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). The other speakers were Graeme Fowlie from Meadows Vets and David McClelland who is Norvite’s Technical Director. Despite the pouring rain on the night, it was fantastic to see so many people in attendance.
In my presentation, I discussed some of the key considerations when putting together a weight management plan for horses and ponies with EMS. This included the results of some recent work we’ve been doing on weigh tapes, the benefits of using straw to slow eating time, and the importance of including chopped fibre in your horse’s bucket feed.
Following the three presentations, we received a wide variety of really interesting questions from the audience during a panel Q&A session. Later, once the raffle prizes had been drawn, the store was then open for shopping and mingling, and it was a pleasure to speak to several members of the audience individually about their own horses.
What made the event particularly special was the fact that all proceeds from the ticket sales went to the Moredun Foundation Equine Grass Sickness Fund, with the final total raised from the evening coming in at £340. This is a really worthwhile cause which is dedicated to supporting and advancing research into equine grass sickness and further improving the treatment for this devastating disease. It was also lovely to have Dr Beth Wells from the Equine Grass Sickness Fund join us for the evening. More information about the work they do can be found here.
Thank you very much to everyone who attended, and to Sarah and David at Norvite for inviting us to be part of the evening. We had a great time and are already looking forward to the next one!
