Changing to a Natural Fibre-Based Diet
Having spoken with Claire Akers, Performance Horse Nutritionist at Dengie earlier this year, Holly Richardson wanted to try all her horses on a more natural fibre-based diet. One horse in particular, Butler, although usually a chilled character to work could be very spooky. He likes being turned out 24/7 but loves to come in on a morning for his breakfast, a snooze and then his work before going back out for the rest of the day and night.
“Claire suggested to try Butler on Dengie Alfa-A Oil as he is eventing at a high level” says Holly. “We wanted to give Butler plenty of slow-release energy for stamina, without making him more spooky. He instantly loved the Alfa-A Oil and it was nice to see his bucket being based on more fibre feed.”

Butler has always struggled to keep his weight and topline throughout the season however, since moving him onto Dengie Alfa-A Oil he has held his condition perfectly this year, as commented on by his physio who can’t believe the change in muscle condition and strength over his back. The improvement in Butler’s strength and condition has helped contribute to his best season yet, culminating in finishing 14th at Burghley 5*, as well as posting a personal best dressage mark.
“Butler likes being turned out 24/7 so when away at a competition I give him a bucket of Dengie Alfa A Oil to munch on during the day” says Holly. “As well as keeping him occupied, this gives me the confidence he is getting a more natural, fibre-based diet which is kinder to his stomach and helps make up for when he is not able to eat grass.”
