Nutrition Team accepted onto the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists

We are very pleased to announce that following a thorough application process, two members of our nutrition team, Tracey Hammond and Katie Reeve, have been accepted onto the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), joining Technical Manager, Dr Katie Williams. This recognition is important because, unlike vets, the title ‘nutritionist’ isn’t legally protected. This means that anyone can claim to be one – even without any qualifications. As misinformation becomes increasingly widespread on social media platforms, it’s become more important than ever to verify the credibility and expertise of those giving advice.

One way to identify experienced and qualified nutritionists is to check if they are listed on the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN) which is governed by the Association for Nutrition. To be listed on the register, nutritionists need to provide sufficient evidence of their knowledge and experience, as well as showing proof of relevant qualifications (at degree level and above). They must also commit to keeping their evidence-based knowledge up to date through continuing professional development (CPD). Registered Nutritionists are bound by the Association for Nutrition code of conduct which means that the horse’s welfare is always the first priority and ensures that all advice is grounded in robust science.

Whether you have family ponies or top-level competition horses, working alongside a nutritionist can often make a big difference in supporting your horse’s health, wellbeing and performance. A lot of the time, tackling issues like weight management will generally be easier and more successful if you have help and support along the way. There’s rarely a single ‘right’ way to feed, and an experienced nutritionist will be able to guide you through the options and tailor a plan that works for both you and your horse.
