Remus Shetland Damson Turns 40!

Remus Horse Sanctuary’s beloved Shetland pony, Damson, turned 40 years old on 1 June! She’s the sanctuary’s oldest resident and holds a special place in the hearts of Sue and the team at Remus and they couldn’t be prouder of how well she’s doing.

Unlike many of the animals who arrive at Remus after suffering neglect or abuse, Damson’s story is one of enduring love and loyalty. She came to Remus along with her daughter, April, and her niece, Mopsey, when their owner could no longer care for them.

Taking on elderly animals, especially those with existing health concerns, comes with significant responsibility but the team at Remus, are deeply committed to offering every animal the highest quality of life, no matter their age or background.

Settling into Sanctuary Life

When Damson, April, and Mopsey first arrived, they were understandably anxious. After all, they were leaving the only home they had ever known. But with time, patience, and gentle care, they began to relax — and soon, they were thriving.

The three remain inseparable and are lovingly managed as a group. They live together with 24-hour access to both their stable and their specially designed woodchip paddock, which helps manage their health and mobility.

Damson lives with Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID or formerly known as Cushing’s Disease), requiring ongoing treatment, is prone to laminitis and has very few teeth so her diet is soft, nutritious and easy to chew. All three ponies enjoy a diet of Dengie Hi-Fi Molasses Free, Alfa-Beet, an additional high-fibre mash and soft hay.

At 40 years old, Damson is far more than a number — her resilience combined with the devoted care from the team at Remus ensures that she has everything she needs in her senior years.
