How to get the most from Dengie Alfa-A Molasses Free

Alfa-A Molasses Free is a straight feed and although alfalfa is abundant in natural nutrients a source of broad-spectrum vitamins and minerals should be added alongside to ensure a balanced diet. Alfa-A Molasses Free may be fed dry or dampened with water or a soaked product such as Dengie Alfa-Beet.

Stepping up to Alfa-A Molasses Free to provide more energy

When Deb Larkin first got her daughter Jess’ pony Mouse she started him on Dengie Hi-Fi Molasses Free as they knew he was likely to be a good doer being a native. FAQs

Is Dengie Alfa-A Molasses Free suitable for horses with PPID and prone to laminitis?

Alfa-A Molasses Free is naturally low in sugar and starch at 4.5% and 2% respectively. Alfa-A Molasses Free at 11.5MJ/kg DE is a higher calorie fibre feed and so is best suited to those with PPID or that are laminitis prone who do not hold their weight with ease.

Does Dengie Alfa-A Molasses Free contain added vitamins and minerals?

No, Alfa-A Molasses Free does not contain any added vitamins and minerals, so we would recommend feeding it alongside recommended quantities of a fortified feed, balancer or broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement.

What is the difference between Dengie Alfa-A Molasses Free and Hi-Fi Molasses Free?

Dengie Alfa-A Molasses Free is a pure alfalfa feed, whereas Hi-Fi Molasses Free contains a combination of pelleted and chopped alfalfa and straw. Straw is included in Hi-Fi Molasses Free to bring the energy (calorie) level down. Both Dengie Alfa-A Molasses Free and Hi-Fi Molasses Free are a blend of chopped and pelleted fibres, with added rapeseed oil as well as mint and fenugreek for palatability. Alfa-A Molasses Free is higher in calories so is more appropriate for working horses, growing youngstock or those who need extra help maintaining their weight and condition and Hi-Fi Molasses Free is ideal for good doers.

What does ‘molasses free’ mean?

‘Molasses Free’ means that no molasses coating has been applied. Most fibrous materials, including straw contain some sugar and so ‘sugar free’ horse feeds don’t exist. ‘No added sugar’ is a more accurate term and in the context of chaffs or chopped horse feeds it means either no coating has been added or an oil coating has been used which doesn’t contribute any sugar. The fibre base ingredients will naturally contain some sugar.

  1. Taishi

My horse really enjoys this feed and he’s a very fussy eater. I use it all year aruond to make up for the lack of grass as he is a poor doer/lightweight horse. It has helped maintain his condition. Definately recommend this feed.

  2. Lisa Baker

I love this feed! My horse started this feed this winter. He has been like a different horse this year, lots more energy, more willing and moving lovely. Really pleased 😀
